ICON; GALLIANO

The fashion world is as often associated with the world of luxury as it is with the world of scandal. A hugely pertinent example is the legend John Galliano; after a hugely successful career spanning more than a decade, one foul-mouthed tirade recently saw his illustrious reputation destroyed. The anti-semitic rant was enough to make people forget completely the countless spectacular couture and ready-to-wear collections he produced for, amongst others, Christian Dior and Givenchy. As the cultural phenomenon of the modern "celebrity" becomes more intrinsically linked with fashion each day, the question has to be asked whether or not this is really a positive thing. Designers used to be so fascinating because we knew little about them and their personal life; we knew of their public eccentricity and the occasional interview but in recent years the elusive fashion designer has become obscolete due to tabloid magazines and online gossip columns.

By no means am I suggesting that Galliano's actions should be ignored, however it is a shame that the differentiation between artistic reputation and personal reputation are no longer seen as separate; whether you love Galliano or hate him as a person, there is no way of denying that he has been responsible for some of the most incredible collections in fashion history, and that the fashion world hasn't been the same without him.
